Anne DeLaney and Gary Alt showing photographs and paintings
March 20th to April 16th

BROWN BEAR FAMILY (Photo: 13” x 22”)

Anne DeLaney and Gary Alt are a wife and
husband team that shares strong interests in nature and art that united
them in a most unusual way. Anne is a plastic surgeon, chief of her
department, for Kaiser in Terra Linda. Gary is an internationally
known bear research biologist. They first met nearly four years ago in
the Norwegian arctic on a Russian ship as part of an expedition to
photograph polar bears. Anne was the ship’s doctor and Gary was one of
the ship’s naturalists. This chance encounter, in a most magical and
unlikely location, cemented a relationship that quickly grew. Two
years later, Anne and Gary returned to the same location, about 600
miles from the North Pole, and were married on the ship by their
Russian captain.

When I interviewed for my Plastic Surgery residency, in answer to the
question “What appeals to you about Plastic Surgery?”, I answered “It’s
like art – you have to know your medium and its possibilities, and use
them to create a solution to a problem.” This has been the source of my
joy in both my art and my profession, and this is how those two aspects
of my life blend and enhance each other. While I loved to draw and
paint as a child, it wasn’t until my Plastic Surgery residency 21 years
ago that I began to explore art in more depth (in my spare time!),
first drawing, then watercolors, and lately pastels. I am mostly
self-taught, but I have enjoyed taking workshops from artists including
Catherine Anderson, Ane Carla Rovetta, Birgit O’Connor, and Daniel
Greene. The subjects that stir my heart are portraits, landscapes, and
wildlife. Over the last several years, I’ve had the opportunity to
travel widely, both on plastic surgery trips to perform cleft lip and
palate surgeries on children and adults in Third World countries, and
with my husband Gary on wildlife photography expeditions. The stories
of the people I’ve met and the animals I’ve observed have entered my
heart and formed the inspiration for this series of paintings.
Gary Alt, Ph.D.
I have been fascinated with wildlife and photography for as long as I
can remember. During my college years I purchased my first serious
35mm camera equipment and began learning more about photography on my
own and with professionals. As a wildlife research biologist, running
Pennsylvania’s black bear management program for nearly three decades,
I used photography extensively, documenting our research activities.
Starting in 1986 I began filming professionally and leading natural
history and photographic ecotours throughout the world, specializing in
brown/grizzly and polar bears in Alaska, Canada, and the Norwegian
arctic. My photos have been published in hundreds of books and
magazines, worldwide, including publications of the National Geographic
Society, National Wildlife, and Canadian Geographic. But most often I
use my photos to illustrate lectures that I give on wildlife issues,
both for education and entertainment, as part of my freelance
consulting business.
INFORMAL WINE APPRECIATION CLASSES
After a wonderfully successful two years, I have suspended classes until later in 2008 while we retool our structure. This series will focus on fundamentals, essentials of wine tasting, wine tasting for the record, with a final session of wine and food pairing, conducted in an informal, sitting-around-the-table discussion, with opportunity to ask questions and get straightforward answers from winemakers Paul Kreider and/or Michael Durphy, who together draw upon 60 years of winemaking experience.
Sessions will meet for four hours each afternoon of two Sundays from 1:00PM-5:00PM. The cost for the course is $125.00 and we limited it to 12 seats per session. Call to sign up and for details. You can reserve space in the next class by clicking here .The way we do this is start a waiting list, and when we have enough participants, we hold the first class.
Graduates of the class become members of The San Anselmo Swirlers, a group that meets at the winery to eat great food and taste bottles of wine some of us might not otherwise experience.
PRIVATE PARTIES
Would you like to hold a private event at our winery for from 10-75 people? Let's talk! We have had great success with the following concept: at 7:00PM we close the door to the public, and you and your group can enjoy the delights of the winery for 2 hours. You can bring your own food, or a caterer can provide it for you. Your guests will be served wine from 7:00-9:00PM when we shut down. The cost for this is $20.00 per person. There is no charge for the use of the facility, except that if it runs past 9:00PM, there is a $100/hour charge- in 15 minute increments- I guess you can figure out why we have to do that. HELP IN THE WINERY
(File this in your tickler file---no, I won't tell you where I keep my tickler file) Sometime around the first week in October (late this year), we will be picking grapes in Marin County (WE DID THIS, 15 OF US, YESTERDAY, 10/15 IN SONOMA) and in other nearby locations; we can always use some extra help. If you think this is something you'd like to experience, let us know. It is not as hard as digging out tree stumps, but it isn't as easy as watching TV either. Unfortunately, due to the uncertainty of weather and ripeness, this event often has a short lead time and cannot be scheduled weeks in advance.
